Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA)

Manipulation Under Anesthesia

Manipulation Under Anesthesia (or MUA) is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment option for pain conditions in the cervical, thoracic, lumbar regions of the spine, pelvic areas and limbs. MUA is ideal for patients who have exhausted other non-surgical treatments available for their orthopedic conditions with little to no lasting relief from pain and symptoms.

During MUA your treatment team will use either general anesthesia, mild sedation or local anesthetic to sedate you for the procedure. Once the anesthesia has been administered the doctor proceeds to apply a combination of manipulations including short-lever spinal manipulation, passive stretches and postural kinesthetic maneuvers as your condition requires. MUA is usually performed in an outpatient surgery center or a hospital with licensed doctors and anesthesiologists. MUA is performed under a rigorous set of procedure regulations to ensure your safety.

MUA works to break up scar tissue called adhesions that can grow around spinal joints and nerves. These adhesions can painfully limit flexibility and restrict movements. By using MUA, your doctor is able to overcome any sensitivity or pain in your targeted area with the help of anesthesia. Your treatment team will be able to access your full range of motion with complete cooperation. In the absence of voluntary or reflexive resistance, your joints and muscles can be fully accessed and treated.

Most patients experience an immediate reduction in pain after the first MUA treatment. Following the procedure, regular appointments for stretching will be scheduled every few weeks to continue to support the successful results of your MUA treatment.

Immediately following your MUA procedure, you will recover from anesthesia under supervision before being released. Most patients experience temporary soreness usually equated to the result of an intense or challenging workout. MUA is safer and less expensive than surgery and has a high success rate for reducing chronic pain, decreasing muscle spasms and helping patients regain range of motion.
